On July 7, the Polish Government decided to temporarily reinstate border controls with Lithuania and Germany. These measures were introduced to help manage the flow of illegal migration from Belarus.
It has been observed that migrants from Belarus are attempting to enter neighbouring EU countries by crossing through the Lithuanian and Latvian borders. As a result, Poland decided to temporarily restore border control with both Lithuania and Germany. Along the 104-kilometre border with Lithuania, inspections will be carried out at thirteen border checkpoints. On the German-Polish border, drivers will be checked at fifty-two checkpoints.
During inspections, vehicles are stopped at random. Particular attention is given to buses, cars carrying multiple passengers, and vehicles with tinted windows. Drivers and passengers must present their identity documents, and their cargo may also be inspected.
Approximately 800 police officers, 200 military police officers, and 500 military personnel are stationed at the border checkpoints.
Drivers crossing the state border at unauthorised locations will face financial penalties.
