Road tolls in Europe: What you need to know in 2027

As the year draws to a close, more information is emerging about the changes to road tolls in Europe that will take effect next year—in some countries, toll rates will increase, while in others, drivers will have to get used to new toll systems. In this article, we share the most important information about the upcoming changes.

Temporary road toll relief ends in the Netherlands

As of July 1, 2026, vignettes were abolished in the Netherlands, and a new road toll system took effect on the country’s roads. From now on, toll amounts depend on a vehicle’s weight, its pollution level, and the distance traveled. However, the Netherlands has decided to apply temporary road toll exemptions for a limited time. As of January 1, 2027, the relief will be abolished, and road tolls will be applied according to the previously established procedure. It is also important to note that failure to install the required toll device or if it is not functioning will result in a significantly higher fine of 500 EUR. And if you do not have a contract with a toll device provider, the fine will be as high as 800 EUR.

New tolls in France

In 2027, new tolls for trucks (the “R-Pass” toll) will be introduced in the Alsace region of France. Similar changes are also expected in the Grand Est region, where new road tolls will apply to heavy-weight vehicles as well. The amount of the new road tolls will depend on the distance traveled, but the exact toll rates have not yet been determined.

Denmark’s road toll system set to change

Starting in January 2027, road tolls in Denmark will apply to vehicles weighing 3.5 tons or more. Currently, road tolls apply only to trucks weighing 12 metric tons or more. Information on toll rates and newly introduced fines can be found here.

Poland to expand its network of tolled roads

Starting March 16, 2027, Poland plans to expand its network of toll roads by adding another 880 km of roads to the “e-TOLL” electronic toll collection system. Once this change takes effect, the total length of toll roads in Poland will increase from 5,870 km to 6,750 km.

Drivers in Lithuania will use the “Via Toll” system

Starting January 1, 2027, the vignette system will be abolished in Lithuania, and drivers will use the “Via Toll” toll collection system. Once this change takes effect, tolls will be calculated based on the distance traveled and the amount of CO2 emissions produced by the vehicle.
