Tachographs to be checked remotely across Germany

It was recently decided that, from now on, tachographs of drivers will be checked remotely across the entire territory of Germany. This decision was made following a successful testing period—sensors and electronic control systems installed in highway patrol vehicles allow for efficient checking of trucks.

During the testing period, from October 2024 to January 2025, nearly a million vehicles were checked. This measure allows to carry out inspections without disrupting the traffic. The first-generation tachographs check parameters such as:

  • Sensor failures

  • Longest power supply outages

  • Speed or route data errors

  • Drivers driving without a valid card

  • Data conflicts related to vehicle movement

  • Drivers inserting the card while driving

  • Last attempted security breach

  • Time setting data

  • Calibration data

  • Vehicle registration number

  • Speed recorded by the tachograph

The new tachographs also check parameters such as:

  • Time of the last authenticated vehicle position

  • Uninterrupted driving time

  • Longest daily driving time in the current and previous period

  • Longest daily driving time in the current week

  • Total weekly driving time

  • Two-week driving time
