Italy is implementing a new road toll reimbursement system

Currently, a lot of Italian highways are undergoing road work. This has caused a lot of congestions and delays on the Italian roads. In light of this the country’s highway company called Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI) has announced that it will make it possible for hauliers and owners of transport vehicles to get reimbursed for the road tolls they pay if the road works cause delays or traffic.

In order to do so, hauliers have to download and register on a free mobile application called Free to X. Those who use Telepass or any other electronic road toll program only have to register on the application – the reimbursed money will be transferred to them automatically. In order to register, hauliers must indicate the code number of their road toll device or the license plate number as well as the needed identity details.

This system allows to get reimbursed only in the cases where the traffic and delays are caused exactly by the road work. The new electronic system scans the license plate numbers at the toll booth, estimates the amount of reimbursement to be made, and automatically transfers the money back. The table given below indicates what percentage of the road toll can be reimbursed depending on the length of the road and the waiting time.
