Switzerland to increase road tolls for trucks in 2025

The Swiss Federal Council has decided that starting from 2025, the performance-related road tax (FTTCP) for trucks will be increased in the country. In this way, the country aims to encourage companies to transport goods by rail transport, instead of trucks and other road-based transportation vehicles.

FTTCP is a federal tax placed on heavy vehicles, the value of which depends on the weight of the truck or bus, its EURO category and the distance traveled. This tax is applicable in the territories of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The tax must be paid by drivers whose vehicles:

  • Are used for transportation of goods.
  • Weigh more than 3.5t.
  • Are registered in Switzerland or other countries and are used on Swiss roads.

This road toll is expected to increase by 5% next year. Currently, the applicable toll for EURO 0-5 category trucks is 3.10ct/tkm, and for EURO 6 category vehicles - 2.28ct/tkm. Higher taxes will also apply to electric trucks.

It is important to also consider the fact that by the end of 2024, the road toll collection system in Switzerland is going to be changed. In order to pay the road tolls in Switzerland, drivers of vehicles registered in foreign countries can opt for three ways - using the EETS system, using their ID card and the PRHVC terminals or using the “Emotach” system. More information on the changes to the Swiss road toll collection system can be found here.
